Geology for those who care
So, lime water bubbles up from underneath. It comes through the sand under the water, forming little tubes. Lime gets deposited on the insides of the tube, rather like thickening arteries. The sand around the tube sticks. Much later, the water level drops, revealing this wacky formation.
