Glyphs, Copan
 

Mayan writing comes in glyphs, whose meaning is pretty hazy. They are (allegedly) part-phonetic, part-semantic, and often have more than one interpretation. All this may help to explain two things: how the archaeologists come up with things like "King 18 Rabbit", and why I am unconvinced that they've really got this language cracked.
